🚀On October 13, 2025, leaders from Leipzig’s universities and research institutions, along with guests from the academic, political, and broader communities, gathered at the Leipzig Science Club to discuss the further development of Leipzig as a center of science. Members of the Leipzig Science Network (LSN)—the association of Leipzig’s scientific institutions—met at the Study Center of the University of Leipzig’s Medical Faculty to discuss steps to further strengthen excellence in research and cooperation in knowledge transfer, administration, and infrastructure, and to promote Leipzig’s appeal to international researchers and students.
At the start, Prof. Dr. Michael Stumvoll from the Faculty of Medicine provided an overview of the new Cluster of Excellence “Leipzig Center of Metabolism (LeiCeM),” which is set to launch on January 1, 2026. At LeiCeM, metabolic diseases such as obesity are researched and translated into clinical applications through a groundbreaking, interdisciplinary approach.
Following this, Prof. Dr. Eva Inés Obergfell, Chair of the LSN Board and Rector of the University of Leipzig, presented her ideas for the strategic development of scientific cooperation in Leipzig. She emphasized that the Leipzig Science Network has significantly advanced collaboration among universities, research institutions, and the City of Leipzig, particularly in the areas of public relations, internationalization, and administration. In the future, the network also aims to harness the full potential of stronger cooperation in research and the strategic positioning of the city as a hub for science. Starting next year, the LSN will support this momentum by organizing thematic workshops and offering seed funds.
