Leipzig is an internationally attractive and cosmopolitan science location that is closely networked with the region's economy. Here, scientists are researching the major issues of our time and paving the way for a future worth living with excellent basic research.

Academic institutions in Leipzig and the surrounding area have united behind the “Leipzig Declaration: Leipzig stands against anti-democratic sentiment and right-wing extremism and for academic freedom, human rights and democracy.”

The Leipzig Declaration, which originated from an initiative by the Senate of the University of Leipzig, was open to all institutions in the region to join. Our chairwoman, Prof. Dr. Eva Inés Obergfell, said at the time of the original adoption by the Senate of the University of Leipzig on February 20, 2024: “Like many other social actors, we view far-right and anti-democratic efforts with concern. We should acknowledge the danger of the restriction of democratic rights and take a stand.”
